Madeira
Madeira, a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, is famed for its rugged landscapes, subtropical climate, and stunning natural beauty. Often called the "Island of Eternal Spring," Madeira offers lush, terraced mountains, dramatic cliffs, and vibrant botanical gardens. Known for its namesake wine and picturesque levadas (irrigation channels) perfect for hiking, the island is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Funchal, the lively capital, blends historic charm with modern amenities, offering a vibrant culinary scene and rich cultural heritage. Madeira's unique blend of nature, adventure, and relaxation makes it a captivating year-round destination.
Reid's Palace – A Belmond Hotel
Once upon a time, people traveled for weeks to different countries. And therefore they didn’t book a few nights in a hotel, they stayed for a month or two or even longer. A hotel was much more than just a place to sleep, it was home. It had to fulfill other needs, it had to welcome their guests as they were family. A hotel was were people met again and again, where friends and traditions were made. It was a sanctuary for happy and carefree times.
Casas da Levada
Being close to nature and the peaceful atmosphere that comes with it, is how we forget about daily struggles and worries. Listening to the wind dance with the tree leaves and to the waves break is like meditation. We enjoy being on the countryside and close to the ocean. With our stay at Casas da Levada we had the chance to combine both.
Savoy Palace
We ended our 10 days trip in Madeira with a very relaxing and quiet stay at the Savoy Palace. After many adventures on the island, we needed some time to simply do nothing and enjoy the warm sun rays before heading back to cold Switzerland. At Savoy Palace we found exactly what we were looking for.
Saccharum
Mike and I are rather active travelers. We love to discover new places by foot and to combine it with some relaxing moments. Madeira invites you to deeply dive into nature and forget about the busy daily life. A hotel or place to stay is more than just a room to sleep for us. After a day hiking or exploring the island, we want to come to a sanctuary where we can find peace and enjoy calmness, preferably with the sound of the ocean nearby. At Saccharum we found exactly that soothing atmosphere.
